She says she has been offered three lead film roles in the past few years, but has turned them down. It is ten years since she appeared on the big screen, and the last time she acted was playing Ophelia in a touring production of Hamlet in 2003, but the movers and shakers of Tinseltown are trying to lure her back into the movies. No one feels the bitter irony of still being sought after more than Emily herself. In a way, perhaps it would be easier if Hollywood had given up on her. I do believe we are architects of our destinies, but with me somewhere along the line something came loose.' I want to get better, I want to work again. It's frustrating, but I am trying to be positive. 'Sometimes I get up in the night and watch TV, or I'll go on the internet or put my head under the pillow. Not sleeping makes you irritable: you feel so tired all the time. 'I've been to a sleep clinic, I've had cognitive therapy and I've tried valerian root, a herbal remedy. 'I keep taking them because of the 5 per cent chance they may work and I'll get a night's rest. 'I can't work because to act you need to be able to learn your lines and I can't do that at the moment. My memory has been affected, I'm not as mentally agile as I would be if I were sleeping properly. 'When you don't sleep, your faculties are not as sharp as they would normally be. 'I was back on track, raring to go and then the insomnia kicked in,' says Emily. She was on low-dose anti-anxiety medication and was responding well. What makes this latest setback so frustrating for her is that, two years ago, she was finally starting to feel well again. The luminous talent that catapulted her to fame more than 20 years ago remains, but she is unable to harness it. Various psychiatrists have been puzzled by her.
